(How to) Hack Nokia 808 PureView to Install Unsigned Apps and to Access System Folders

Update (Oct. 2012) – If you have updated your 808PureView to Belle FP2 then the hack described in this post may no longer work. In that case please refer to this updated post with a new hacking method for Belle FP2.

Nokia 808 PureView, the latest imaging flagship from Nokia is out now in the market and many of you would have already had your hands on this camera-killer phone. However I must say that any smartphone can’t be utilized to its full potential as long as its not hacked/jailbroken. Until the release of Nokia 808 (Belle FP1), Norton Symbian hack was working fine (still working in all pre-Belle FP1 and first gen Belle FP1 phones) but many Nokia 808 users have reported that the Norton app is giving “expired certificate” error on installation. So in this post I will explain the older Trend Micro Security method (with a little modification) to hack Nokia 808. If Norton Hack is not working for you in Nokia 808 then follow the steps given below –

First of all, uninstall any antivirus app (like FSecure etc) you already have in your phone as we will install Trend Micro app later in this method and presence of two security app at a time might render the phone unstable

Download this zip file and extract the contents anywhere in the phone (preferably make a new folder and extract file’s content in it). It contains following files –

Nokia808BelleFP1_Hack_by_digipassion.sisx
X-plore_1.58.sisx
TM_Mobile_Security.sis
ROMPatcherPlus_3.1_Lite.sisx

Now first install Nokia808BelleFP1….sisx file, ignore any warning and continue with installation

Then install X-plore_1.58 (skip this step if you already have X-plore latest version installed)

Launch X-plore and open/expand C drive. Go to “Menu/File/Make Dir”, enter name of the folder as “tmquarantine”. Now scroll to the file “tmquarantine.zip” and open it. Go to “Menu/File/Extract to”, select the “tmquarantine” folder as the extract location (by touching it twice). This will extract four files to “tmquarantine” folder

Now install TM_Mobile_Security app and launch it. Go to “Options/Quarantine list”. There should be three files in this list, mark all three via Options and then restore them. Confirm the action and after restore process is successful exit Trend Micro app. Uninstall TrendMicro by touching and holding at its icon in phone menu and select “Delete” option from the popup. Confirm the prompt and wait for the process to complete.

Now install ROM Patcher+ Lite and launch it, enable two patches (installserver RP+ 1.7 and open4all RP+) and done! Now enjoy installing any unsigned app and full system access (sys, private folders). Better add these patches to “Auto” via options in ROM Patcher so that you won’t have to enable them after every phone restart.

Wondering how all this works? Refer to this post to know.

Note – Sometimes the phone goes in restart-loop (restart again and again) due to Trend Micro app compatibility issue. If this happens then switch-off the phone and then switch it on, just when the home screen shows up (do this process quickly and I mean real quickly) touch menu button, when the menu appears scroll down the screen to the end of the menu where Trend Micro icon shows up, touch and hold at this icon until options pop-up. Select “Delete” and confirm the action. Wait for uninstallation of Trend Micro app. However if the phone freezes and restart during any stage of the above quick maneuver then do not panic, just try again the whole process thinking that you were not quick enough last time. Actually Trend Micro app auto-runs at phone start (and freezes the phone) but it takes few seconds to run. You have to delete it before it launches itself (every second counts).

WARNING – Hacking is safe only in the hands of power users and it is certainly not meant for novices so do it at your own risk and only when you perfectly know what you are doing. I am not responsible if anything goes wrong!

How to Open, Unpack/Extract and Edit a sis/sisx file? – Some sis explorer/editor Softwares

$

0

Sis/sisx files (short for Symbian Installation Script) are Symbian specific “self-extracting archives” which contain “to be installed” application files and a script that tells the Symbian installer the exact location where these files are to be copied in the phone. Ever wondered how to view the contents of a sis file? Well, there are quite a few softwares out there (for Windows) to help you in this matter. You may call them sis viewer, unpacker, editor, explorer or extractor. Here I will describe five such softwares for Windows which are relatively easy to use –

SIS Contents (symstuff.com)

SISXplorer (symbian-toys.com)

SIS Ware (cequenzetech.com)

KVT Symbian Installer (kvtsoft.net)

YAMGui Plus (download)

With these apps, it’s very simple to view the contents of any sis/sisx file – just run the application – click File/Open – select the sis/sisx file you want to view and the software will open it. You can also extract the contents of the file to a specified location (in computer) if required. This may be helpful in case you want to see the location of files of an installed app, for example if you want to uninstall an app but it’s not getting uninstalled by “Application Manager” or is not showing in “Application manager” then you can also remove it manually by deleting all its files from the phone. For this you must know the exact location of all files of the app (which you can easily see by opening the sis file via any sis explorer software described above). Besides there are many other things you can do with these apps e.g. viewing and editing theme files (mif and mbm), sign and unsign sis files, show signing status and extract certificate from files, edit and rebuild sis files etc.

SIS Contents

SIS Contents GUI

Out of all the five softwares listed above, SIS Contents is the best in my opinion because of many reasons –
It is still being updated regularly (while the others are not) while others are ‘’end-of-life” now
It can even open/edit DM (sis files downloaded from Nokia Ovi Store)
It can also save pkg script file embedded in a sis/sisx file
Its very simple to edit and save any sis file using SIS Contents with a minimalistic interface

Other softwares can also open and extract sis files but are not as easy to use. Try which one you like. For any problem feel free to leave a comment.

“Symbian Belle Refresh” Update Rolling Out for older S^3 Nokia Phones (N8, C7, E7, C6-01)

Today Nokia rolled out the much talked about “Nokia Belle Refresh” Update (SW version 111.040.1511 dated 28th of July 2012) for older first generation Symbian^3 phones (Nokia N8, C7, E7, X7 etc). This update is not a major one though and is mainly meant to iron-out the bugs and issues of original Belle software. Some new features in Belle Refresh include –

Updated web browser (version 8.3), new improved Music Player, some new Widgets (Weather now/forecast, 3G on/off, Clock flip/mechanical/text, Mobile data tracker, Photo Wall/Gallery slideshow widget, Offline and Mobile Data on/off). Many bugs and stability issues have also been addressed in this release. Unfortunately video codec issue (video player crashing while playing some video formats) is still there in my N8 after the update.

Belle Refresh Update

Nokia Belle Refresh Update

How to update – Nokia Belle Refresh update is available OTA (12-20 MB), so you can update directly via phone’s SW update application over 3G/Wi-Fi connection. Besides you can also update your S^3 device (Nokia N8, C7, X7, C6-01, E7) via Nokia Suite (latest version) or NSU. As usual this update will be made available in phases in different parts of the world so be patient if your phone is not getting Belle Refresh right now.

Also note that if your phone was hacked before updating to Belle Refresh (via OTA) then it will remain hacked after update. However if you have updated via Nokia Suite (fresh install of firmware) then follow the method described in this or this post to hack your phone after the update.

“Dead Phone USB Flashing” – Flashing a Dead/Bricked Nokia Mobile using Phoenix Service Software

$
0
0

I have already explained use of Phoenix (Nokia Service Software) in a detailed tutorial post. That post describes the general and custom firmware flashing of Nokia phones via Phoenix. In this post I will describe a specific subtype of phone flashing called “Dead phone USB flashing” via Phoenix. There are many scenarios when this type of flashing is required like –

When the phone is bricked (not starting up/white screen/only vibrates at power on) due to corrupt system files etc
Previous attempt of flashing or software/firmware update was interrupted (due to low battery/data cable disconnection/computer hanged etc) and the phone is dead now
Hard reset (three-key format method) is not working to revive the phone
Phone is in “Restart loop” (restarting again and again) and hard reset is not working
Normal flashing is not working (when the phone is on)

So if you are having any of the above issues then follow the steps given below

Requirements
PC running Windows 7/Vista/XP SP3
Compatible Data Cable to connect the phone with PC
Your Nokia mobile phone in switched-off condition
Phoenix – Download latest version of Phoenix (download link here). Disable your Antivirus and firewall and then install Phoenix in PC
Latest version of Nokia Suite/PC Suite installed in PC (Nokia phone connectivity cable drivers are installed with Nokia Suite/PC Suite)
Original firmware files of the phone or Navifirm to download these files (refer to this post to know how to use Navifirm to download Nokia firmware files). After downloading the files, copy them to C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products/RM-xxx (create the last folder – RM-xxx – according to your phone model like RM-596 for N8)

All set up! first disable your antivirus and firewall software

Now launch Phoenix (better “Run as Administrator”) in PC and connect your phone with computer via data cable (phone must be completely off – remove and reinsert battery if required)

Make sure that connection type is shown as “No connection” in Phoenix

Now go to “File / Open product”, a window will pop up, type and select RM-xxx (as per your phone model)

Now go to “Flashing /Firmware update”, another window will pop up, click the (browse) button with three dots. Select the suitable package from opened dialog box

Tick the option “Dead Phone USB Flashing

Finally click “Refurbish” button, a pop up dialog box will appear with some instructions. Press mobile’s power on/off button for a few seconds until flashing starts at Phoenix, now release the button. Phoenix will take care of rest of the process. However do not worry if nothing happens on pressing the power on button. Flashing will continue anyway and should finish in few minutes (~10-15 minutes) ……when done, phone will restart, now you may safely disconnect the phone from PC.
There you go, your phone in a brand new state!

Note – Do not worry if flashing is not successful in first attempt, try again a few times before quitting.
Also you must understand that all cases of dead phones (like “Contact service” issue) CAN NOT be revived by flashing. In fact flashing is mostly helpful in software/firmware related issues. There are many reasons that individually or in combination render the phone dead. Specifically the hardware related issues (damage to the circuit by falling/water/shock) are not amenable to flashing and thus require expert care (good mobile repairing technician preferably at Nokia care).

Camera Sound Mute Mod – Disable Camera Click/Capture tone in Nokia Symbian Belle Phones

$

0

In most countries of the world it is mandatory for all cameras to produce a clicking sound while taking a photo for privacy and security reasons. Mobile cameras are no exception to this rule and therefore no option is built by default in Symbian phones to disable camera clicking sound (sound produced when the physical/on-screen camera button is pressed to take a photo). Usually there are 4 selectable preset sounds under camera app settings which will ring even when all sound alerts are off or silent profile is on. There are situations when this clicking sound is totally undesirable and annoying like while snapping a sleeping baby. So can’t we get rid of this camera sound anyhow? Well, the answer is yes and actually its quite simple! Just follow the simple steps given below –

1. Download camera_sound_mute_mod.sis file from here and install in your phone. It is an unsigned file so the phone must be hacked to install it, refer to this post to hack your phone within minutes.

2. As the name indicates, this mod/hack adds an extra “Off” option under capture tone settings in camera app. So after installing the mod file, launch the camera and go to “Menu/Settings/Capture tone”. Scroll down and select “Off” and done! Enjoy noise free clicking.

I have successfully used this mod in my Nokia N8 and C7 with Belle/Belle Refresh. It should also work fine in Belle FP1 and FP2 (Nokia 603, 700, 701, 808 PureView).

Note – Always respect the privacy of others and follow the rules of the land where you are using the mobile camera to avoid getting into trouble.

Symbian Belle FP2 Hack (using Safe Manager) for Nokia 603, 700, 701 and 808PureView

$

Update (Feb. 2013) – From some reader’s feedback it appears that following method is not working anymore in Nokia 808PureView with firmware version 113.10.1507 onwards. I will cross check it with some of my friends having 808 and will update the post soon. Please do share your experience with the method to help the thread.

After updating to Belle Feature Pack 2 (via Nokia Suite), many DiGi-PASSION readers have reported that the current Symbian Belle hacking methods are not working in their phones (Nokia 603, 700, 701, 808) giving “component built-in” error. So, in this post, I am describing a new hack/jailbreak specific to Nokia Belle FP2 phones only. Similar to other older hacks this method is also based on ROM Patcher+ and basic mechanism is also the same viz. inserting ROM Patcher driver files inside C:/sys/bin using an antivirus/security app. However in this method Safe Manager app is used instead of Norton/Trend Micro. Safe Manager is a powerful, multi-utility application for Symbian (in Chinese) which also has a File Manager, capable of full system read/write access. This feature is utilized to insert certain patch files inside specific system folders. Now there are two somewhat different methods to hack the phone (in the sequence of preference) as described below –

First Method

1. Download this zip file and extract its contents. Install BelleFP2_hack_digipassion.sis in your phone (ignore all warnings and continue with installation). Safe Manager will launch itself after installation (launch from menu if not), select No at all the three prompts.

2. At the main interface of Safe Manager go to “Other/FileMgr”. Now via its file manager go to E:/FP2hack. Open FP2hack folder, there will be a file named “updatedswicertstore.dat”, copy this file and paste inside C:/resource/swicertstore/dat folder (via options/insert, confirm replace if prompted). Create this path if it does not exist. When done go back to the main interface of Safe Manager. Now go to options and select “Stop” from the popup menu, select yes at “Stop all services” prompt then exit Safe Manager. You can uninstall Safe Manager now as it is no longer needed.

3. Now install ROMPatcher3.1_FP2.sisx (present in the zip file contents). After installation run ROMPatcher+ from phone menu and apply all patches, exit ROMPatcher and enjoy installing any unsigned app/game!

Second Method

If above method does not work for you then follow the steps given below
1. Download this zip file and extract its contents. Install BelleFP2_hack_digipassion.sis in your phone. After installation Safe Manager will launch automatically, select “No” at all the three prompts.

2. Go to “Other/FileMgr” and go to the extracted files (in Step 1). Open ROMPatcher drivers folder, there are three .ldd files in this folder. Copy all the three files one by one and paste/insert inside C:/sys/bin folder. After copying all the three files, go back to the main interface of Safe Manager. Now go to options and select “Stop” from the popup menu, select yes at “Stop all services” prompt then exit Safe Manager. You can uninstall Safe Manager now as it is no longer needed.

3. Now install ROMPatcher+3.1_FP2_Lite.sisx in phone (present in the extracted files in Step 1). After installation launch ROMPatcher+ from menu and apply all patches to install unsigned apps and full system access.

Note – The ROMPatcher+v3.1 given above is a new version specific to Nokia Belle FP2 firmwares only (thanks to Marco Bellino at symbian-toys.com). So it is not recommended to use the above methods to hack older Symbian (Belle/Belle Refresh/Belle FP1) phones. You can safely hack these older firmwares via methods described in following posts

Download Updated Official Facebook Mobile App (v3.1.1) for Symbian/Java Phones

Update (6th April 2013) – Facebook Java mobile app is updated to version 3.1.1 now, so I have updated the download link given in this post with the new version files. The splashscreen and UI has been changed in the new version and the overall speed and user experience has improved considerably.

Facebook app for Symbian and other Java/J2me supporting phones (including the newer Belle Refresh/FP2 devices – Nokia 808, 603, 701, 500, N8, C7, E6 etc) has been updated to version 3.0.1 recently. However it is not available in Nokia Store still which denotes the growing ignorance of Nokia towards Symbian. Anyway you can get it free from here (.jar and .jad in a zip file) or from here (login to facebook required). I did not notice any change in the new version in comparison to the older one which means its mainly a bug-fix release with only minor speed improvement.

Facebook_mobile_app

Personally I don’t like the official Facebook app for Symbian/Java phones and more so after using the Windows Phone FB client (which is awesome). The FB Java app has a very basic set of features and limited functionality which might be good for cheap, feature phones but certainly not enough for Symbian devices. Its indeed very sad that Facebook have not developed a native Symbian app. Fortunately there are some 3rd party apps to fill this void and fMobi is perhaps the best of these.

Note – N8fanclub.com has (almost an exact) copy of this post with title “Facebook for every phone updated…..”. Looks like they are short of content right now….

Nokia Belle FP1/FP2 Live Multi-Tasking Switcher Mod for Symbian Belle/Refresh phones

$

Task switcher is a useful function in multi-tasking Symbian smartphones (accessed by long pressing menu button) to toggle between open apps and to force close any open app. Nokia introduced a new task manager/switcher with Belle FP1 update in which opened apps are shown in large live-view windows (rather than small boxes with names in old task switcher). This way it is more useful and elegant than the old plain boxed one. Unfortunately Nokia did not oblige older S^3 phones with this feature (not even in Belle Refresh software update). But thanks to Symbian modders now you can also enjoy this new live multi-tasking switcher in any older Symbian^3 phone (Nokia 500, N8, C7, C6-01, E7 updated to Belle Refresh firmware). Karass has created an app which replaces the default task switcher with the new one. Follow the steps described below to get this –

1. Download BelleFP1_TaskSwitcher_digipassion.zip file from here and extract the contents of archive. Install BelleFP1_Task_Switcher.sis file in your phone. It is an unsigned file so your phone must be hacked to install it (do not worry if it is not, just follow the simple steps described in this post to hack your phone within minutes).

BelleFP1_TaskSwitcher

BelleFP1 Live Multi-Tasking Switcher

2. Now copy the second file (WidgetRegistryClient.dll) from extracted zip archive and paste in C:/sys/bin folder using X-plore or FExplorer (openforall patch must be activated in ROMPatcher to access C:/sys/bin path), confirm overwrite if prompted. You may refer to this post to know how to copy/paste any file using X-plore.

3. Exit X-plore and restart the phone, done! Enjoy the new task switcher….

Note – I have successfully used this mod in my Nokia N8 having Belle Refresh firmware. I don’t know whether it will work in older Belle versions.

BT Charger – Recharge Symbian phone’s battery via Bluetooth

$

BT Charger is an innovative (and potentially a blockbuster) app which the developer claims to actually charge the phone’s battery using electromagnetic radiation in the surroundings and Bluetooth hardware of the phone – aptly called as electromagnetic harvesting. Dennis Siegel, the developer of BT Charger explains the science behind the app as follows (excerpt from his site) –

The omnipresence of electromagnetic fields is implied just by simple current flow. We are surrounded by electromagnetic fields which we are producing for information transfer or as a byproduct. Many of those fields are very capacitive and can be harvested with coils and high frequency diodes. Accordingly, I built special harvesting devices that are able to tap into several electromagnetic fields to exploit them. The energy is stored in an usual battery. So you can for example gain redundant energy from the power supply of a coffee machine, a cell phone or an overhead wire by holding the harvester directly into the electromagnetic field whose strength is indicated by a LED on the top of the harvester.

Depending on the strength of the electromagnetic field it is possible to charge a small battery within one day. The system is meant to be an option for granting access to already existing but unheeded energy sources. By exploring these sources it can create a new awareness of the invisible electromagnetic spaces while giving them a spatial dimension.

The app description says –

This app is designed to charge smartphone from the Bluetooth antenna. It is based on electromagnetic induction. A potential difference (voltage) appears across a conductor in BT-antenna when it is exposed to a varying magnetic field. This app uses that voltage to charge your smartphone.

Interface of BTCharger is simple having just an “Enable Bluetooth” toggle button. Enabling this option power on phone’s bluetooth and the battery icon start showing charging status. But the catch is that the charging process will be satisfactory only if the phone is close to the strong electromagnetic field (like near overhead electric cable, working electric appliances etc). Also the app must continue to run in the background to charge the battery thus do not exit the app rather press menu button to come out of it. You can download BTCharger (unsigned) free for Symbian from here. It is compatible with all Belle/Belle Refresh/Belle FP1/FP2 phones (Nokia N8, 701, 603, 808PV etc).

However there are some questions in my mind regarding BT Charger -
1. Bluetooth itself drains the battery very fast then what is the point of charging and discharging at the same time?

2. Besides the running app also consumes battery so if the rate of charging is too slow then it is useless?

Considering all these issues all I can say is that BT Charger is a very promising app(roach) which still needs a lot of improvement to be considered a solution of the eternal battery problem of portable gadgets (including mobiles). But hats off to the developer for materializing this concept (of tapping an easily available source of energy).

Update – Its an April-fool act from app developer Kolaysoft! BTCharger is a prank app which fakes the battery charging. Hope you enjoyed the idea and the app……Dennis Siegel or his site has no connection with it!

[How to] Transfer Contacts, Messages and other data from one phone to other (between Symbian, Android or iOS)

So you just got your swanky new smartphone but when the initial euphoria subsides you have quite a few tasks to perform, after all switching from an old phone to a new one is not an easy nut to crack. Transferring media (songs, videos etc) is very easy these days thanks to widespread compatibility of popular media formats across platforms. The difficult part is transfer of contacts, messages, notes and other phone specific data. There are many tricky methods to copy such data depending upon the mobile OS involved. Most of such methods are time consuming and difficult for an average mobile user. In this post I will describe the easiest and almost universal (applicable for three most popular mobile OS – Android, iOS and Symbian) method to perform the phone-to-phone data transfer.

All you need is a simple mobile-data transfer software, a Windows PC, both the phones (which may be both Android, iPhone or Symbian or a combination of any of these) and their connecting data cables, rest of the process is a breeze –

1. Download the data-transfer software from here and install in your Windows computer – internet connection is required as the installer will download the package. When the installation completes do not run the software, first disconnect the computer from internet as it will authenticate the installation online

2. Now connect both the phones to computer via USB data cable and wait for a while (if you have connected the phone(s) first time with PC then let the computer install device drivers). Preferably select PC Suite mode/connection if the phone asks for the connection type.

Wondershare MobileTrans

Mobile Data Transfer

3. Now run the software in computer and register with the email and key provided in the zip file. After registration is complete, the software will detect and show both your phones at the main screen. MobileTrans might ask for some actions like installation of MobileGo app in the phone or to enable “USB debugging” option in Android phones etc just follow the instructions as asked

4. After successful detection of both the phones and getting other settings done, MobileTrans will show some or all transfer options applicable for the two devices. Before moving further, make sure that the source phone is at the left side and destination phone is at the right, if it is not the case then just click the flip button to swap the position of phones for example (as shown in the screenshot) we are transferring data from Nokia N8 (Symbian) to LG Optimus G (E-975) thus N8 (source) is at left side while Optimus G (destination) is at right.

5. Now select the option(s) you want (Contacts, Text Messages, Call logs, Apps, Photos, Music and Videos) and click “Start Copy” button, let the process finish (it will take some time so be patient). When done, disconnect the phone and wonder how easy it was!

Note – If your phone is not detected by the software then download and install device drivers from here and repeat the process again….good luck

The mobile-data transfer software is compatible with Windows 8/7/Vista/XP only
All Symbian S60 and S40 phones, Android 2.1 and later devices, iOS 5 and later (iPhone and iPad) are supported

Wondershare MobileTrans is available for US $39.99 at the official site and its worth every penny, please buy if you like it to support further development of this wonderful software.
